Downtown Atlanta

Downtown is experiencing the most exciting residential growth boom in its history.

It's currently 60 percent higher in residential density than the city as a whole and that number is only going to grow. There are 7,000 residential units proposed or under construction. And the area offers a wide variety of housing choices.

Living in Downtown provides easy access to some of the South's greatest attractions. The neighborhood boasts the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, the Georgia Dome, Underground Atlanta, the Tabernacle, Philips Arena, CNN (and its studio tour), Imagine Children's Museum and more.

New ConstructionIntegral Group plans to build a $45 million, 180-unit residential project called Sweet Auburn Village across the street from Big Bethel AME church on Auburn Avenue.

The Sweet Auburn project is expected to include 40,000 square feet of office space and 42,800 square feet of retail space as part of the project.

Although the project was created in conjunction with the historic and influential Big Bethel AME Church, it got off to a rocky start.

Integral initially intended to demolish a row of six historic buildings to make way for the new construction but the Atlanta Preservation Center objected.

"It's a national registered district, which implies that it's something important to the entire nation," Boyd Coons, executive director of the group, told the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

The Sweet Auburn Avenue played a crucial role in the birth of the Civil Rights movement. The birth home of Martin Luther King Jr. is just blocks away from the proposed development. The area is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Integral is now considering preserving some facades. The company and church officials hope the project will bring people and commerce back to the street where King grew up.
